This month, we’re celebrating something big: the 60th anniversary of the Older Americans Act (OAA).
Since it was signed into law on July 14, 1965, the OAA has helped millions of older adults stay healthy, independent, and connected to their communities—right where they want to be. It’s the backbone of many of the services we provide here at SeniorsPlus, the Area Agency on Aging for Western Maine.
What Is the OAA?
The Older Americans Act is the only national law focused entirely on the social services needs of older adults living in the community. It funds essential programs like:
- Meals on Wheels
- Information and Assistance
- Wellness and Educational activities
- Support for caregivers, including training and respite care
Thanks to this law, older adults across the country and right here in Franklin, Oxford, and Androscoggin counties have access to the resources they need to stay safe, supported, and connected as they grow older.
Why It’s More Important Than Ever
By 2030, one in five Americans are projected to be 65 and older. By 2040, more than 97 million Americans will be over the age of 60. That’s a big shift, and it means we need to invest in programs that are proven to work—like the ones funded by the Older Americans Act.
At SeniorsPlus, we rely on OAA funding to run most of our programs. That includes delivering meals, helping people find in-home care, providing information on local resources, and supporting family caregivers who are doing their best to help loved ones’ age at home.
Here’s the Problem
The number of older adults is growing fast, but federal funding for the OAA hasn’t kept up. Without more support, it will get harder and harder for us, and the other Area Agencies on Aging across the state of Maine and nationwide to meet the rising need.
That’s why we’re speaking up and asking you to do the same!
How You Can Help
Congress is deciding right now how much funding the Older Americans Act will get in next year’s budget. Your voice can make a difference.
Here are two simple ways to act:
- Email your Senators and Representatives. Use this template, but feel free to add your personal connection to these services.
- Use USAging’s quick online form to send your message to Congress here. (Link: Tell Congress Why the Older Americans Act Matters)
If you’ve ever had a meal delivered, found support as a caregiver, or received helpful advice or resources from someone here at SeniorsPlus, the Older Americans Act helped make that possible. Let’s make sure these services are still here for the next generation of older Mainers.
