Blog—The Plus Side: What is Pride Month and why it matters?

Pride Month is celebrated each June, and it honors the LGBTQ community’s history, resilience, and ongoing struggle for equality. While it originated from the 1969 Stonewall uprising in New York City, a turning point in the modern LGBTQ rights movement, it has since evolved into a global celebration of identity, visibility, and activism, emphasizing both joy and justice. Parades, art, and advocacy events highlight not only current issues but also the contributions of those who paved the way. Celebrations embrace people from the entire community joining in to bring attention to the LGBTQ population and their continuing struggle for equal access, rights, and treatment.

Specifically for older LGBTQ adults, Pride carries layered meaning. Many older Mainers came of age when being openly gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender risked arrest, job loss, or family rejection. Their fight for rights has resulted in what younger generations often now take for granted—such as marriage equality or the decriminalization of same-sex relationships. However, as they age, they often face unique challenges of isolation, limited access to culturally competent healthcare, and a lack of affirming elder care environments. Some entered later life without partners, children, or family support systems, making LGBTQ-friendly community programs vital to their wellbeing.

At SeniorsPlus, we strive to create an environment where everyone feels welcomed, respected, and valued. Our services are designed to be accessible to all, and we continually welcome ideas and feedback on how we can become even more inclusive and supportive of the communities we serve.

Pride Month is also a reminder that kindness, respect, and acceptance matter. Every person deserves to feel safe being who they are and proud of the life they’ve lived. Even small acts of compassion, inclusion, and understanding can make a meaningful difference in someone’s life and help create stronger, more connected communities for everyone.

There are many Pride activities that take place across the state. We hope you will take the time to explore what is going on in your community and join in with your fellow Mainers to celebrate the contributions that a rich and vibrant diverse population brings to each of us.
