As you may know, April is National Volunteer Recognition Month. National Volunteer Week for this year is scheduled for the week of April 19–25. Throughout the month our staff put in additional effort to express our sincerest gratitude for the dedication, commitment, and hard work of our volunteers.
U.S. data for 2025 suggests that 28.3% of the population regularly participate in formal volunteer activities. For 2025, the value of volunteer service is estimated to have contributed $167.2 billion to the U.S. economy. For 2023 in Maine, the value of volunteer service is estimated to have contributed $790.8 million to the local economy.
At SeniorsPlus, the ongoing impact of our volunteers is inspiring. In FY25, we had 227 volunteers who provided 12,485 total service hours. The contribution of our volunteers has made a tremendous impact not only on our agency, but also on the communities that we serve. Whether spending countless hours packing/prepping and/or delivering food, providing support and/or resource information to our clients, or working behind the scenes, the service of our volunteers does not go unnoticed or unappreciated.
We are forever grateful for the unwavering support and willingness of our volunteers to assist our agency in making a true difference in the lives of those we serve. Our reach would not be as expansive or as impactful as it is without the work of our volunteers.
While we have made incredible progress throughout the years with the work that we do, there are still so many older adults and adults with disabilities and their families in Maine who need more support, resources, education, and care. If you or someone you know has even an hour a week available to commit to helping with our mission, we have a multitude of continued volunteer assignments that remain open. We have current volunteer openings in the following roles: Friendly Caller, Kitchen Packer, Meals on Wheels Delivery Driver, Money Minders, Medicare Counselor, Social Dining Assistant, and Reception Support. With each role the time commitment needed and the ability to perform the assignment in-person or remotely vary greatly. Please join us in helping to inspire others to join us as a new volunteer or to consider an additional volunteer assignment if they are already volunteering with us.
